The time is 1926, the place the front porch of a summer home in the tiny coastal town of Coley's Point, Newfoundland, a community still reeling from the aftermath of World War One, which claimed the lives of so many of its men. Mary Snow (Jennifer Porter) is a young woman whose father was killed in the war, leaving her bereaved mother to consign Mary into service and her young sister to a children’s home. As the play begins, Mary studies the evening sky through a telescope. Her reverie is interrupted by the unexpected appearance of Jacob Mercer (C. James Roberts) the young man with whom she had once fallen in love, and who, a year ago suddenly departed for Toronto without so much as a good-bye. Now Jacob has returned to Coley's Point, hoping to win back the affection Mary once felt for him. In his absence, however, Mary has decided to accept the marriage proposal of the local schoolmaster, who may be on the dull side but is certainly reliable and more than willing to provide refuge for Mary’s younger sister. With Mary’s employers away at the wake of a local fisherman, the verbal jousting begins as Jacob employs every device he can to convince Mary that she doesn’t love her new fiancee and that he, Jacob, is the only one for her.

SALT WATER MOON is a gently humorous, deeply affecting play by one of Canada's most respected writers.

"Tender as a caress, delicate as a love poem…Tremendous!" - Southam News.

"A gem of a play, an old-fashioned love story that is as affecting, funny and evocative as a dream." Toronto Globe & Mail.
